17 Oct Meet The Team: Luke Shelmerdine
For this month’s Meet The Team feature, we spoke with Luke Shelmerdine who is our Business Development Executive…
What made you want to get into the travel industry?
It’s an extremely exciting time to join the travel industry, the combination of travel and technology is proving to produce year on year economic growth on a global scale. The industry is exploding with innovation, which in turn provides opportunities for ambitious individuals like myself to really dig our teeth in and capitalise on.
When did you join LateRooms.com Business?
I joined at the start of September 2018
On a day to day basis, what does your job involve?
My role involves identifying new business opportunities, seeking out the appropriate contact in the organisation and calling the prospective customer in order to generate leads for the business. It’s an easy sell because the service we offer is completely free, it’s more about working out which companies would benefit from our service and which won’t. During my calls, I need to understand the needs of the prospects and respond with a plan of how we are able to meet each individuals needs. Each call has a goal of trying to arrange a face to face meeting, in which I will travel out and attend myself. Here, I can talk the prospect through our service and when appropriate, get them set up and booking their accommodation with us. Ideally, I am aiming to spend 2/3 days a week out on meetings, and the remaining days in the office calling/emailing businesses and logging any information on our CRM system.
What do you love most about your job?
Coming from a background in recruitment, it’s nice to have the work-life balance back again. The company allows flexible working hours, so I have been able to plan my day around the best train times for myself as I have an hours commute. I really enjoy speaking to different people every day, learning more about their business and see each call as a challenge to generate new business for LateRooms.com. Each day is different, it’s not your typical heavily KPI-driven sales role, you are given autonomy and trusted to use your skills to produce the expected results for the company.
What previous experience do you have that got you here today?
I graduated from Leeds University with a degree in Educational Psychology and when I graduated, I started a role as a BDE at a software company in Manchester which helped me kick start my career in sales. During my time here I got promoted to an Account Management position. After around 10 months of consistently hitting targets and overachieving, I got headhunted into the world of recruitment. Two very different roles, but fundamentally both sales and have completely transformed me from a young naive grad, into a commercially aware and results driven professional.
Where is the best place you’ve ever travelled to?
My last family holiday was to Mauritius which was pretty exotic. Since I’ve been going away with friends, I love Croatia it’s such a beautiful country with some amazing festivals in the summer.
And where’s on the bucket-list?
Australia, New Zealand, SE Asia and South America.
What is the best advice you would give to someone wanting to join the travel industry?
It doesn’t matter what background you come from, our office is a diverse mix of people from very different backgrounds. If you have a genuine interest in working in an ever changing industry showing year on year growth, look into it.
